AC Troubleshooting

Please keep the following information in mind to ensure your air conditioning system works efficiently and reliably, even under extreme conditions.

Your air conditioner will operate for as long as needed to maintain the temperature you set on your thermostat. On extremely hot days, it may run for longer periods than on moderate days. It will also operate for longer periods when any of the following conditions are present:

  • Frequent opening of exterior doors
  • Use of laundry appliances
  • Hot showers
  • More people than usual in the home
  • More than the normal number of electric lights in use
  • Drapes or blinds open on the sunny side of the home

Performing the following routine maintenance tasks will help your air conditioner work more efficiently and increase its lifespan. Please keep in mind the following safety precautions:

  • Keep the filter clean: A dirty or improperly installed air filter on your indoor unit can increase operating costs and shorten the life of the unit. Refer to the indoor unit literature for detailed filter cleaning instructions.
  • Do not block floor, wall or ceiling vents: Drapes, furniture, toys, or other household items blocking vents will decrease the system's efficiency and lifespan.
  • Do not cover or block the outdoor unit: The outdoor unit requires unrestricted airflow. Do not cover it or place items on or next to it. Do not allow grass clippings, leaves, or other debris to accumulate on the sides or top of the unit. Maintain a 12" (304.8 mm) minimum clearance between the outdoor unit and tall grass, vines, shrubs, etc.
  • Check condensate drain: Your air conditioner removes humidity from your home during the cooling season. After a few minutes of operation, water should trickle from the condensate drain of the indoor coil. Check this occasionally to make sure the drain system is not clogged.
  • Do not operate below 70 F: Your outdoor unit is not designed to operate when outdoor temperatures are lower than 55°F/12.78°C without modification. If operation below this temperature is required, consult your Bryant dealer.
  • Filter Change: Change filter every 2-3 months. Dirty filter will result in longer operating cycles, reduced unit life and reduced energy efficiency.
